Most modern printers can connect to your wireless network. Below are the two most common methods.
Most printers include a built-in wireless setup wizard accessible through the control panel.
Turn on your printer and navigate to the control panel display
Look for the wireless or network settings menu (usually indicated by a WiFi icon)
Select "Wireless Setup Wizard" or "WiFi Setup"
The printer will scan for available networks — select your network name from the list
Enter your WiFi password using the on-screen keyboard
Wait for the connection confirmation. The wireless indicator light should turn solid when connected
If your router has a WPS button, this is the fastest method to connect.
On your printer's control panel, navigate to network settings
Select "WPS" or "WiFi Protected Setup"
Press the WPS button on your wireless router (usually on the side or back)
Within two minutes, confirm the connection on your printer
The printer and router will automatically exchange connection information
Frequently encountered situations during printer setup and how to address them.
Ensure your printer is within range of your router. Move it closer to eliminate distance as a factor. Verify your router is broadcasting its network name (SSID) — some routers are set to hidden, which prevents devices from detecting them.
WiFi passwords are case-sensitive. Double-check capitalization and special characters. If using the on-screen keyboard is difficult, consider temporarily changing your router password to something simpler during setup, then changing it back afterward.
Restart both your printer and router. Power cycle by turning each off, waiting 30 seconds, then turning back on. Verify the printer is connected to the correct WiFi network — especially if you have multiple networks.
Check for interference from other devices. Microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors can disrupt WiFi signals. Consider changing your router's wireless channel in its settings — channels 1, 6, and 11 have less interference on 2.4GHz networks.
You can connect your printer using either a USB cable or wirelessly over your network.
Connect the USB cable from your printer to an available USB port on your computer
Turn on the printer. Windows should automatically detect it and begin installing drivers
If automatic installation does not occur, go to Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners
Click "Add a printer or scanner" and select your device from the list
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation
Ensure your printer is already connected to your WiFi network (see WiFi setup section above)
Go to Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners
Click "Add a printer or scanner"
Windows will search for available printers on your network — select yours from the list
Click "Add device" and wait for Windows to install the necessary drivers
Connect the USB cable from your printer to your Mac
Turn on the printer — macOS should automatically detect and configure it
If needed, go to System Preferences → Printers & Scanners
Click the "+" button to add a printer, then select yours and click "Add"
Ensure your printer is connected to the same WiFi network as your Mac
Go to System Preferences → Printers & Scanners
Click the "+" button at the bottom of the printer list
Your Mac will scan for available printers — select yours from the list
Click "Add" — macOS will automatically download drivers if needed
Printer drivers allow your computer to communicate with your printer. Always download from official manufacturer websites to ensure compatibility and security.
Avoid third-party driver download websites — they may bundle unwanted software or contain outdated drivers. Always use the official manufacturer website to obtain the latest, safest drivers for your specific printer model.
